Formal Methods for Dependable Computing: From Models, through Software, to Circuits

Formal Methods for Dependable Computing: From Models, through Software, to Circuits Speaker/Performer: Sanjit A. Seshia, Asst. Professor of EECS, UC Berkeley Live broadcast at mms://media.citris.berkeley.edu/webcast; Questions can be sent via Yahoo IM to username: citrisevents. The schedule for the fall Research Exchange is at www.citris-uc.org Abstract: Computing has become ubiquitous and indispensable: it is embedded all around us, in cell phones, automobiles, medical devices, and much more. This ubiquity brings with it a growing challenge to ensure that our computing infrastructure is also dependable and secure. We need to develop and maintain complex software systems on top of increasingly unreliable computing substrates under stringent resource constraints such as energy usage. In this talk, I will discuss how formal methods --- mathematical techniques for specification, design, and verification of systems --- can help improve system dependability. As illustrative case studies, I will present work we have done on verifying timing properties of control software (relevant for cyber-physical systems, such as automobiles), analyzing the impact of faulty devices in digital circuits, and designing electronic voting machines so as to enable verification of desired properties. The talk will also touch upon some of the core underlying technology, such as satisfiability modulo theories (SMT) solvers, and describe challenges for the future. Bio: Sanjit A. Impulse-based ultra-wide-band (UWB) radio systems and applications

Google Tech Talks May 22, 2008 ABSTRACT The old idea of impulse radio dates back to Marconi's first wireless transmissions using sparks. Unlike most wireless today, impulse radio transmissions are extremely wideband signals. The recently FCC- released frequency band from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz is the widest unlicensed frequency band ever released (7.5GHz). This ultra wide bandwidth (UWB) is commercially explored for even faster data transfer using traditional, multi-band (OFDM) RF techniques. However, the available bandwidth is wide enough for impulse radio transmission giving new functionality and new implementation challenges. In this talk I will show how power efficient impulse radio solutions are feasible in standard digital CMOS technology. Quite non-standard and untraditional design strategies must be used including time-domain signal processing. Circuit topologies for higher order Gaussian pulse generation and power efficient, correlating RAKE receivers will be explained. Impulse radio transmissions have additional interesting properties compared to narrowband modulation. With time-domain processing (TDOA) highly accurate positioning is feasible in the millimeter range. Improved sensitivity for robust communication. Large number of channels (greater than 100). Novel applications are also feasible using impulse transmission. Combining novel design techniques like "Swept-Threshold sampling" and digital lossless integration, micropower impulse radar is feasible in CMOS. A ...

Antique RC Radios-Their evolution

RC equipment from the past. I've been fascinated with RC flying and the equipment since the early 60's. Some folks told me I ought to do a video on them, so here it is with what I had to work with. I used my very own collection of the first Digital proportional radios, and then show the radios from the man who got me involved with RC stuff in the beginning. John Donovan. In my case, I became so involved in RC, I even worked for Phil Kraft in his Signature Series line, till they went out of business. It was an incredible honor, for he had fore site to make radios the way we wanted them and is known as the father of Digital Proportional radios Today, I fly mostly Hitec RCD equipment, which is reliable and affordable and even have blown up some RC airplanes with plastic explosives. (Blue Thunder F-16's, starring Roy Scheider) So enjoy this bit of history, and thanks for watching.
